Universal and Ageless Design
for Barrier-free Living

What do a petite mother of a toddler, grandparents of three teenagers, a professional basketball player and a young man suffering from severe arthritis have in common? Each of them may have accessibility issues in their own home.

To explain, a petite person may have great difficulty reaching the contents of the upper cabinets in the kitchen, and while bringing in a toddler in a stroller, may struggle to get up the front stairs and over the threshold. Grandparents, or anybody in their later years in life, may not be able to easily get up and down the stairs of their home, or have enough room to allow a caregiver to help in the bathroom. Anyone taller than what builders of homes consider "average" may experience great back strain just reaching over to brush their teeth each day at the lavatory that is too low for their height. And the young man with arthritis - may be confined to a wheelchair and have trouble just getting through the doorways of every room in the house, and even more difficulties in the bath and kitchen.

What does all this mean? It means that most of us will at sometime in our lives, if not now, have accessibility and mobility needs that our current homes just don't accommodate. It means that you may want to consider making modifications to your home to make your life easier now - and in the future.

And modifications for accessibility are created under the name of Universal Design. Universal Design is the planning and designing of living spaces to accommodate all individuals, regardless of ability or disability. And as our population ages, and we become healthier and able to live longer, we want to continue to live as independently as possible, in our own homes, not necessarily in healthcare institutions.

That's why at Christian Roofing and Remodeling, we've pursued as much knowledge as we can regarding Universal Design and the phenomenon of Aging in Place. In fact, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) have a developed a joint education program for builders and remodelers called the Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). The training program includes classes in home modifications of all types for accessibility and all levels of ability, solutions to common barriers for understanding the unique needs of seniors and others experiencing difficulty in enjoying their homes to the fullest. Interestingly, there are only about 1300 Certified Aging in Place Specialists in the U.S. and two of them are on staff at Christian Roofing and Remodeling!

If you, or someone you love, is considering how to stay in their home now and in the future, call Christian Roofing & Remodeling. We have the answers to your questions. And because we are CAPS graduates, you can rest in the fact that we are knowledgeable and committed to providing the aesthetically enriching, barrier-free living environment you want.
